IISc, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi Top In Research Faculty

A leading globalistion and market expansion advisory firm, Zinnov released its report "Top research faculty in tier-1 engineering institutions in India" on 4 October' 2013. It includes a detailed assessment of the faculty in India's Tier-1 engineering institutions and also identifies the top faculty by major areas of research.
 
As per the study IISC, followed by IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, emerged as the top institutes for faculty research competence in India. The faculty in these institutes has the highest number of industry and government research grants, international and national journal references and conference publications and patents (approx. 90 per faculty) to their credit. In addition, these top institutes have higher proportion of senior faculty members (all PhDs) with greater overall experience.
 
The study also unveiled that majority of faculty members in the top institutes have good international exposure both in terms of research and teaching. The faculty at IIT Kanpur has the highest foreign university experience with 15 per cent(approx) of them having taught abroad and 2/3rds qualified with foreign post doctoral/PhD experience. IIT Madras emerged as the overall leader in this space with approximately 15 coveted achievements and awards (IEEE fellowship, Bhatnagar Awards etc.), more than 60 international awards/ fellowships (Humboldt fellowship, MNC grants) and more than 40 national awards/fellowships (e.g. Boyscast, INSA, INAE fellows).
 
The results of the department level analysis revealed that the faculty scores of Computer Science Engineering department of IIT Delhi were the highest, backed by strong research expertise, high overall experience and good connects with the industry. This is reflected in the high volume of projects handled by the faculty of CSE dept. of IIT Delhi, of which 26 per cent of projects was done for MNC clients. Security, wireless technologies and data mining are the key areas where research is driven by experienced faculty with higher than average competence in this department.
 
IIT Kanpur ranks top in the Mechanical Engineering discipline, driven by faculty with strong research focus and higher overall experience. The mechanical engineering departments at IIT Delhi (12 per cent) & IIT Bombay (16 per cent) offer significant opportunities to collaborate with close to 12 per cent and 16 per cent of research projects done in collaboration with MNCs. In this space, Heat Mass Transfer, CAD/CAM and Renewable Energy are the key areas where research is driven by experienced faculty with higher than average competence.
 
In the Electrical & Electronics Engineering and in Aerospace discipline, IISc is the leader, driven by strong research focus and overall faculty experience. While Optics, Electromagnetic interference and Antennas have emerged as top areas of faculty led research in the EEE discipline,  Aerospace Structure Design and Fluid Dynamics  are key research areas for Aerospace discipline of Tier 1 engineering institutes. Some industry relevant innovations in EEE include, 'NAVA'-High speed Internet technology and 'Aakash 4' - ultra low-cost tablet. Similarly in the aerospace segment, there are several notable innovations including including 'PRATHAM' - IIT Bombay student satellite initiative, Solar powered miniature aircraft among others.
 
"Even as innovation-focused corporate, look to expand their ecosystem and leverage the research expertise of India's top engineering institutions, the study has brought out the impact that international exposure and industry collaboration can have on the nature of education imparted to our students," says Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov.
 
The institutions from which the top research faculty were assessed included IIsc Bangalore, IIT BhU ( now IIT Varanasi), IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati and BITS Pilani, across departments such as Computer Science & IT, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical & Industrial and Aerospace. The broad parameters of assessment by priority included Faculty research strength, Academic Credentials, Rewards and Recognition to faculty, External Connect with industry bodies and Level of International Exposure.

The Most Brilliant Students of Kota Ever

Anuj Nagpal(AIR 190):  This guy was the most intelligent person I ever met. In hostel, he was one of the most fun loving guys, he only used to do the assignments of mathematics (only because it was taught to us by the director of the coaching). Though I was not in his hostel but my closest friends were in his hostel and used to tell me all the stuff they did at night. Late night chats, discussion about random things (which had no relation with JEE at all). There was a time when all feared Nagpal and used to say "Nagpal is gonna come and he is going to spoil our full night." Shubham Tulsiani says This is quite a common practice among institutes so I would like to address the trends too apart from the personal experiences and I'll also write on one aspect the question didn't explicitly ask  - offers  before  JEE Pre-JEE (class 12th) I had a couple of 'offers' - Some people from Akash Institute came over to my place to 'gift' me books to help me prepare for JEE. All I had to do was - guess what - yes, sign a form ! I was amazed at how insistent they were and despite me saying I didnt need the books and wouldn't sign,  they made me keep the books. They then visited / called me about 5 more times to get my signature (until I finally returned the unused books on their last visit and told my hostel guard to not allow them back).
