IIT Guwahati ranked at 87th spot among world's top 100 universities

Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati was ranked at the 87th position among the top 100 world universities – under 50 years of age – published by London-based Times Higher Eductaion (THE) magazine on 30 April 2014.

With this entry into the list, the IIT-Guwahati has taken India in the list of top 100 under 50 University rankings. It is the first and only Indian entry in the list and it shares the 87th rank with Portugal's New University of Lisbon and Australia's University of Western Sydney.

The list was topped by Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology for the third consecutive year in the annual evaluation of the world's top 100 universities less than 50 years of age.
• Second position - retained by Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne
• Third position - South Korean institute named Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
• Fourth position - Hong Kong University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong
• Fifth position – Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University

Top performers in the list

• UK and Australia emerged with most representatives with 14 institutions each
• US - 8 institutions
• Spain - 7 institutions
• France and Germany - 6 institutions
• Canada had 5 institutions
• Taiwan - 4 (Taiwan emerged as the top Asian nation in terms of numbers with four representatives)

Apart from India, Brazil also has single entry in the list. Mainland China and Russia have failed to secure any place.

The 100 Under 50 included only those universities/institutions that are founded in 1964 or later.

Phil Baty, the ranking editor at THE magazine claimed that as none of India’s universities has failed to make the World University Rankings' top 200 posed a serious concern over the country’s great intellectual history and growing social and economic influence.

A comprehensive list of 13 performance indicators that underpins the prestigious THE World University Rankings was used for compilation of 100 Under 50 2014 but employed an especially calibrated methodology to better capture the characteristics of young institutions.
