IIT-Bombay continues to be the top choice for the best of the young brains in the country. The institute has retained its position as the most sought-after IIT in the country, with Delhi and Chennai coming a distant second and third. A number of factors have been responsible for this, ranging from importance given to streams over geography, from placement records to newer short-term courses on offer, tell students. Of the top 100 rankers in JEE-Advanced 2014, almost all have opted for IIT-B computer science as their first choice. But 58 were allotted seats at IIT-B in computer science in the first round, followed by Delhi, where 36 of the top 100 have been admitted (see box). Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati was ranked at the 87th position among the top 100 world universities – under 50 years of age – published by London-based Times Higher Eductaion (THE) magazine on 30 April 2014. With this entry into the list, the IIT-Guwahati has taken India in the list of top 100 under 50 University rankings. An IIT Guwahati student, S.M. Shoaib Ahmed, 22, from West Bengal was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room around 7.30am today. “He was found hanging when a group of students came knocking this morning to ask him to come to class with them,” Labanu Konwar, public relations officer of IIT Guwahati, said. The door of Shoaib’s room was not locked from inside. “Our students often sleep without locking their doors,” Konwar said. The IIT authorities were informed at 8am, sources said. The room, number 204, is on the second floor of Dibang hostel, about 700 metres from his classroom. Shoaib had a class at 8am, which is why his fellow students from the hostel had come calling. Shoaib was a second semester post-graduate student of mathematics. The Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, will organise the second edition of Reflux, its annual chemical engineering symposium, on March 29 and 30. Reflux 2.0 will include a number of events including a lecture series, exhibitions, a panel discussion and technical writing, which would promote application-based learning. The festival hopes to promote the use of new non-conventional energy sources. It would bring together academicians, students and industrialists associated with chemical engineering. Workshops on advanced engineering software, including MATLAB and ANSYS, would also be held as part of the event. To promote learning between students and providing industry with solutions to complex problems, Reflux 2.0 will organise competitions such as a paper and poster presentation, a process design problem, industrial design problem, green tech and quizzes, besides competitions such as T-shirt design and photography in which students from all fields can participat...

                                             This placement season is proving to be a winner at IIT-G, with the institution showing a  remarkable  improvement in offers. Information made available by IIT-G's training and placement cell stated that over 400 students have been offered jobs since December last year, with the highest package being 125,000 USD. "Despite recession,  IIT-G  has been able to attract companies. This season, the placement team faced difficulties but the hard work paid off and individual branches registered commendable improvement. Many firms have shown an interest in conducting on-campus recruitments, including a number of PSUs," said Natesan Srinivasan, faculty in charge at IIT-G's training and placement cell. There is no doubt that IIT has been the prime face of technical education in India. If the IITs are not ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide, it is really a question of research than scholastic ability.  Since 1970s, each year, at least 500 IIT graduates come to the US and have successfully illustrated to the Americans what people from India are capable of. The pity is that most of them never looked back. To call it brain drain is an understatement. Students from other Indian universities also come to the US in equal numbers and are doing well. I realised the fact, when I came here for my graduation. Though I am not an IIT graduate, I studied at Osmania University in Hyderabad. I did my graduation from a small university in Texas, where I got a PhD in engineering. And I hope, it pains no one if I state that even my university, ranked absolutely nowhere in the US, and still produces better PhDs than any IIT in India.
