IIT-M Whizkids to Hone Their Skills in Japan

Earning further laurels for IIT-M, city’s premier technical and engineering institution, two of its students, Suraj Vallamkonda and Supriya Kalidoss clinched the Nissan Global Foundation’s Fellowship award recently.
They will be given a research grant of up to `1.2 lakh and will also be given a short training in Japan by Nissan.
The award was presented to the students by Hiroaki Harat, general manager of Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Japan, in the presence of Ramamoorthy, Dean, IIT-M. Harata congratulated the students and informed that they had been selected through a tough and gruelling procedure which tested both their technical and leadership skills.
The organisers further informed that the award, which was given in collaboration between IIT Madras and Nissan Global Foundation, was presented on the basis of a selection procedure that involved over 50 contestants. The winners were decided by a jury consisting of top engineers from Nissan and professors from IIT Madras. “The students will attend a short training programme at the production plant and R&D centre in Japan. Also, they will attend an internship at Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre, India,” said Harata.
Apart from the scholarships, Nissan is engaged in collaborative research projects with IIT-Madras in advanced areas of automobile technology. Named ‘Nissan Support Program’, it supported Research & Development projects at IIT-M in the areas of engineering, science, management, humanities and social sciences.
