National University of Singapore tops the chart among 250 universities ranked by QS Asia Pacific University Rankings in 2014, followed by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and University of Hong Kong. From India, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Mumbai were the only two institutions that made it among the top 50 in the Asia-Pacific region, at rank 38 and 41, respectively. Five other IITs feature in the top100, with Delhi University placed at the 81st position. A survey of first-year IIT Bombay students by Insight, the student media body in the Powai campus, reveals that an alarming 56 per cent of students belonging to various categories, like SCs, STs and OBCs, feel discrimination does exist in the institute, albeit in a discreet manner. While an assessment of IIT-JEE results has shown success is skewed in favour of students with urban and high-income background, this is the first time an IIT has looked at the issue of biases and discrimination on the campus on the basis of region, language, caste, religion and category of the students. While 69 per cent of freshers denied any caste discrimination, 28 per cent said it was there in an indirect manner while three per cent said they had witnessed it first-hand. The survey was conducted on first-year students who joined IIT Bombay in July 2013. A questionnaire with 25 questions was sent online to them at their official IIT Bombay email address. The AUV being tested by students at IIT Bombay campus in Powai on Tuesday.  Students and faculty of IIT Bombay are working on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), similar to one that was deployed to search the black box of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane, which can detect underwater sound source of the kind emitted by a black box. The Rs 22-lakh robotic submarine Matsya, unveiled Tuesday, has multiple applications, which include defence (monitoring, detection and surveillance), marine science research, oceanography studies, rescue operations, and constant monitoring and maintenance of underwater power lines, among others. “This is the third version of the vehicle and is the most advanced. Of late,  Aamir Khan  has been getting many requests from colleges across the country to watch an episode of his television show with their students. But due to prior commitments, the actor has been unable to fulfill those requests.  Now, we’ve been informed that Aamir has finally given the nod to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.  A source close to the actor reveals, “Aamir has been invited by IIT-Bombay and has finally managed to make time for the meeting. He will be attending the screening of the fourth episode of the second season of  Satyamev Jayate  with the institute’s students.”  The three episodes that have aired so far touched the issues of rape, the working condition of policemen and the garbage disposal process in the country.
