How inter-IIT Sports meet 2013 has transformed IIT Guwahati ?

Inter-IIT Sports Meet IIT Guwahati

The 49th Inter-IIT Sports meet is being conducted at IIT Guwahati this week. That's right folks! It's that time when us bunch of nerds try to brawl it out with another bunch of nerds in an attempt to uplift one's self-esteem and make one feel like the James Dean of College. "Look at me... I'm the Hockey team captain...... of IIT Guwahati. Ain't that something?" Just kidding! It's a great time to have where a bunch of really talented people match it up which also allows for the IIT students to get in touch with each other.

This is one of the best inter college events in the country and is organized in one of the IIT's every year. Last time, it was organised in IIT Roorkee in December 2012. It can be considered sort of mini Olympics for the people involved. It features a variety of sports ranging from Football, Cricket, and Basketball to Squash, Table Tennis. Every IIT fights for its victory, resulting in a battlefield.

It happens every year in the month of December. IIT Guwahati will be hosting this year's meet. Students train round the year just to prove their mettle on this platform. Each sport carries 10 points for the winners, 8 for the runners up, 6 for the 3rd place and 4 for the 4th place. These numbers vary for the athletic events, and are 20, 16, 12 and 8 respectively. The total points are then summed up in what is known as the General Championship tally. The one with maximum General Championship tally wins the Inter-IIT Sports meet, and receives the honor of lifting the prestigious trophy.

Apparently, it also factors into the overall development of college. To the committee in charge of the event- this place isn't the one that comes to mind when thinking of a venue. The college is still in its teenage years, it is yet to mature and develop in terms of infrastructure. It might be argued that IIT Guwahati possesses one of the greatest infrastructures as compared to so many other Indian colleges. Now, why is it then that such a college didn't have a main gate all these years? In fact, anyone entering the college would be misled into thinking he was headed for a refugee camp. We're missing certain key things here and there.

The discussion of the venue probably went like this – the committee was talking about the places they never visited. It's highly likely that most of them haven't explored the north-east. So, they said "Hey! Why not has IIT Guwahati as our next location? It'd be great! Countryside, serene atmosphere, the mountains, the view and the Brahmaputra! Greenery everywhere! Green all over the ground, green stuff in the mounts and green stuff to....ahem! Yeah let's do this". It's highly likely that's how it all went down.

This put the guys at IIT Guwahati in a tough spot. The construction was still in mid-process and progressing slower than a turtle climbing up a hill with a slab of marble tied to its body (Why a turtle would climb uphill with a slab of marble tied to it, I have no clue. It's the analogy that matters here not the practicality of it all).

Needless to say, under a time constraint, things certainly needed to speed up. And, boy did they do just that. I walked past the cricket ground and saw what is apparently said to be the new Badminton court. I swear this to you, the day before – it was not there. It just sprouted out of nowhere! It's like these people are working on steroids. Like in Age of Empires 2, somebody typed "STEROIDS" cheat into the chatbox and activated instant build.

Inter-IIT Sports Meet

All of a sudden you have hostels coming up. Every student in campus will remember those digging huge poles right into the ground during the semesters. Each it did it, it'd send tremors throughout the hostel. The frequency hit such a point that some of us actually slept through an actual earthquake tremor mistaking it to be one of those machines again. To its credit, it adds for a fair share of amusement by setting up the ambience real nice when playing Battlefield 3.

We also have a new Student activity centre (SAC) with a Food court. Yes, we finally have a Food Court. No longer shall we stand victims to the monopoly of the evil empire of "Le miserable nourriture" that plagues our college. Finally, our food shall be more nutritious (which is a sad thing really, considering the Food Court shall mostly be serving junk food). And FINALLY, yes FINALLY! We have a main gate made. If Rome can be built in a day, surely then IIT Guwahati can be done overnight! Hopefully, we have the Inter-IIT Sports meet regularly here. Please people; Guwahati is a lovely place to visit. Consider all that greenery.

With all that said and done, IIT Guwahati currently boasts off some of the most impressive infrastructure regarding the sports. All the facilities are top-notch promise a really good showdown between the teams. With 15 colleges, this seems like an entertaining time for anyone residing in the vicinity. In true Olympic style- Let the games begin!
