What do IIT TOPPERS do in life ??

  1. "If they were so intelligent why didn't they start some company, earned a lot of money"
I am not sure if you value 'starting some company' for itself or just as a means to earning a lot. It is clear though that earning money is the ultimate aim that someone should have according to you - it is not the case for me. Research pays well enough for one to lead a comfortable life. After the basic requirements are met, I am sure what determines how happy you are is how much you love doing whatever it is that you do for 12 hours a day and not how many cars you buy in a year.
  2. "Why didn't they do good to society"
Oh, this part of your question is so valid because no researcher ever did any good to society. Everything around you that you use was just god's gift to humanity and researchers never played any part whatsoever in any development.
  3. "Why didn't they do good to themselves"
Again, a very valid point you raise, because people who pursue their interests are so not doing good to themselves by doing what they like. Just as you say, everyone should let their interests run down the drain, run after money, earn a lot and stay unhappy, only then will the do any good to themselves. I obviously was wrong in my idea of what is good for me as you already have it figured out for me.
  4. "Became prof in some not so well known university in the US (at least to Indians)"
That's another parameter to consider when choosing a university that we all foolish people forgot - "how well known the univ is to Indian public". The naive person that my brother is, considered only the quality of research that he'll do at the place (TTIC has one of the strongest theory groups in the US). Despite the fact that he is doing rather well in his area, I bet he'll be devastated when I tell him that he should have considered 'how popular the university is' before joining, because apparently, nothing else matters. Right ?

Whenever people have a lot of choices - all of which ensure a reasonably comfortable life (a scenario that many top 10 JEE rankers end up having), it shouldn't surprise you that they follow their interests even though they might have been financially better off not doing so. Their priorities might not be that same as yours and you should understand and accept that rather than assume that your priority order of things was the only 'right' one.
