No extension for 2 IIT directors

 Two of the six IIT directors whose terms are ending by June 2014 have been denied clearance by the HRD ministry for renewal or selection to another institution. 

Madhusudan Chakraborty, director, IIT-Bhubaneswar and Anil K Bhowmick, director, IIT-Patna will not get another term. 

In case of Chakraborty, the ministry said though he had vigilance clearance, it was found that he had overdrawn travelling allowance. Though he had refunded the extra amount, a complaint was forwarded to Central Vigilance Commission and a warning issued to Chakraborty. The CVC is yet to take a view on Chakraborty's actions. 

The ministry said it had also received some complaints about irregularities by Chakraborty in recruitment, purchase of equipment, fraud etc. The board of governors of IIT-Bhubaneswar has been asked to send a report on these complaints. 

Bhowmick, the ministry said, was "not clear from vigilance angle as regular departmental action for major penalty is underway against him". Bhowmick, as dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy of IIT-Kharagpur, had outsourced the work given to the institute by Coal India Limited despite clear condition that "all documents received from CIL for study will be treated as confidential and not to be divulged to any third party" without the approval of CIL. 

Bhowmick is also charged with being in touch with M/s TCG, the company to which the work was outsourced, even before CIL gave the work to IIT-Kharagpur. He is also accused of making back-to-back payments to M/s TCG. 

Sources said Bhowmick's appointment as director of IIT-Patna should not have taken place as it was done without proper vigilance clearance. IIT-Kharagpur has already served him a charge-sheet. 

The ministry said there was no vigilance case pending or being contemplated against four IIT directors. These include Devang V Khakhar, IIT-Bombay; Sudhir K Jain, IIT-Gandhinagar; IUB Desai, IIT-Hyderabad and M K Surappa, IIT-Ropar. Khakhar has already been given another term.

The Most Brilliant Students of Kota Ever

Anuj Nagpal(AIR 190):  This guy was the most intelligent person I ever met. In hostel, he was one of the most fun loving guys, he only used to do the assignments of mathematics (only because it was taught to us by the director of the coaching). Though I was not in his hostel but my closest friends were in his hostel and used to tell me all the stuff they did at night. Late night chats, discussion about random things (which had no relation with JEE at all). Shubham Tulsiani says This is quite a common practice among institutes so I would like to address the trends too apart from the personal experiences and I'll also write on one aspect the question didn't explicitly ask  - offers  before  JEE Pre-JEE (class 12th) I had a couple of 'offers' - Some people from Akash Institute came over to my place to 'gift' me books to help me prepare for JEE. All I had to do was - guess what - yes, sign a form ! I was amazed at how insistent they were and despite me saying I didnt need the books and wouldn't sign,  they made me keep the books. They then visited / called me about 5 more times to get my signature (until I finally returned the unused books on their last visit and told my hostel guard to not allow them back).
