Life in BITS-PILANI

Bits-Pilani is one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India. It resides in a lazy small hamlet in Rajasthan, less than an hour away from Haryana border called Pilani. If you are planning to come to bits, you do not need to know much about Pilani except its bus stand for that’s as deep as you would like to go in the town. Besides, everything being available at campus, there is neither need nor fun in venturing outside except maybe a few trips to Sarla and Nutan a month. While Sarla is the only decent restaurant (cum bar) outside the campus, Nutan is a favourite hangout of students for tea (and maybe, a bit of smoking)!

Laden with lush green lawns and an impressive tree cover, Bits campus is a delight for the bird watchers and nature lovers. Also, with modern constructions merging into traditional architecture, walking around the campus is sure to be an enriching experience!

Regular tests, hectic cultural and social activities through clubs and departments, daily tea and snacks at redi (beside each hostel), late night hanging out with friends at ANC(all night canteen), unlimited fun in Oasis (cultural fest) and mind numbing studying during comprehensive examinations (en-semester tests), these are what truly characterise the life at Bits!

Indeed, there are so many tests at BITS that it has sometimes also been referred to as Birla Institute of Test Series! Since, there is no minimum percentage for attendance at BITS, these tests serve their purpose well in keeping students on their toes. But, the real essence of college life, for most students, is the active participation of students in various clubs and departments! From poetry to drama to social service, there is a club for all kinds of interests and activities! Then, there are departments which help run cultural, sports and technical fests. These departments and clubs are brimming with activity round the year.

STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTRE (SAC): this is where most of the clubs’ and departments’ meets take place.

Bringing a much needed respite from the boring mess food, Redis are always there with their own share of joys and intellectual debates while sipping tea with samosas! Situated beside every hostel, these redis are a great place to hang out with friends. But they are open oly until evening. After the sun sets in the western sky, students can be seen teeming in All Night Canteen (ANC) and Food king.

Food king is a bitsian start up and is open till 2 in the late night. ANC is a place no bitisian can ever forget, the reason why it is so popular among students is its concept of sale through I-D cards, that is, no cash is required for buying items there and the cost is added to the mess bill. A plate of hot and steaming maggi is the most classic dish at ANC!

All Night Canteen (ANC): the most beloved haunt of students!

There are 3 fests held in BITS namely- OASIS (cultural), APOGEE (technical) and BOSM (sports). Without taking anything away from the technical and sports fests, it would be fair to say that OASIS is the most popular fest from any Bitsian’s perspective. The night-outs with friends at oasis spent dancing with friends to the beats of DJs and attending music shows and other performances are probably the most memorable moments in Bitsian life. Another reason why oasis is very popular among students is because the gender ratio improves significantly during the fest! That Farhan Akhtar performed in the most recent oasis may give you a faint idea of the enormity of the fest!

The 4-day festival comes to an end usually around late October. About a month later, chilly winds and tumbling temperatures mark the arrival of the most dreaded moments in a bitsian’s life: The comprehensive examinations (comprees). Feverish last minute studies begin, notes are exchanged, assignments are completed and everything other than academics takes a back seat. College life at BITS is one hell of a journey. If you are considering to come here, be prepared to make everlasting friendships, to expand your horizons, to groom your talent, to discover new interests, to learn new skills and go back with an enhanced all-round personality.
