Most IIMs retain last year's cut-offs



With just a month before the results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) are announced, most Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have released their selection criteria for their flagship post-graduate programme.

Most have retained the 90 percentile cut-off. The ones at Raipur, Kozhikode, Ranchi, Lucknow, Udaipur and Kashipur fall in this category. IIM-Trichy, which was under IIM-Bangalore's mentorship, has also given an indicative percentile of 90.

While IIM-Calcutta has kept an overall cut-off of 95 percentile, with 90 percentile as the sectional cut-off, IIM-Rohtak has given a minimum of 85 percentile. IIM-Shillong has set it at 70 percentile in each section.

IIM-Bangalore is yet to announce its cut-offs. Last year, it was 90 percentile. IIM-B's emphasis on consistent performance with previous academic records taken into consideration will continue. IIM-B will not have a fee hike this year as there was an increase in the past two consecutive years. It is Rs 17 lakh now. The increase in number of seats is yet to be known.

After being under constant criticism for poor diversity, institutes will continue granting extra points for women and non-engineers. Gender diversity will continue to fetch extra marks in many IIMs. Academic diversity will also fetch points as in the case of IIM-C which can be one or two depending on subjects, IIM-L that offers three, IIM-K two percentage and a maximum up to one point in Trichy.

The six new IIMs -- Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy and Udaipur -- will continue to adopt the common process of written test and personal interview. IIM-Trichy will coordinate it this year. The older IIMs will also share results with the new ones.

* Number of students who took the test -- 1,73,738

* Test dates -- October 16 to November 11

* Number of seats -- 3,335 seats in 13 IIMs

* Increase in number of seats this year -- 115 seats

* Results expected on - January 14, 2014

* CAT scores also open doors to various other non-IIMs

Percentile primer

Percentile is always referential and a comparison-based evaluation. For instance, if a group of 100 students appear for an examination, the person who scored the highest marks is the one with 100 percentile. If there's more than one student scoring the highest marks in the group, all will be 100 percentilers.

IIT PAPER LEAK IN 1997

A private coaching institute in Lucknow secretly called a select group of its students on the evening of May 2, barely 12 hours before the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission into the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), for `valuable suggestions'. Nearly 100 students out of the total 700 reached and were told that the tips should be learnt by rote. The next day, much to the excitement of the students, 70 per cent of the physics and chemistry questions appeared in the examination papers. The father of an examinee told IIT authorities in New Delhi over the telephone about the leak but he was rebuffed. ``Such doubts are normal and are expressed every year by parents whose wards have not done well in their examinations,'' said an IIT official. Shubham Tulsiani says This is quite a common practice among institutes so I would like to address the trends too apart from the personal experiences and I'll also write on one aspect the question didn't explicitly ask  - offers  before  JEE Pre-JEE (class 12th) I had a couple of 'offers' - Some people from Akash Institute came over to my place to 'gift' me books to help me prepare for JEE. All I had to do was - guess what - yes, sign a form ! I was amazed at how insistent they were and despite me saying I didnt need the books and wouldn't sign,  they made me keep the books. They then visited / called me about 5 more times to get my signature (until I finally returned the unused books on their last visit and told my hostel guard to not allow them back).
