IIT-JEE: Students may not need coaching classes

Are coaching classes really needed to get into IITs?
Every year, you come across ads plastered across all forms of media with tall claims of their students making into IITs, after being coached by them.
But, does it really work? Are coaching classes, where students are intensely trained and, of course, coached, absolutely vital for success in JEE?
IIT data reveal surprising results
Data collected by the IITs during the admission processes show that almost half the candidates said they had studied on their own without any help from coaching institutes.
Every student who appear for the JEE are asked whether they prepared for the test on their own or “via other methods.” The second option covers classroom coaching, study materials provided by the coaching classes, mock tests etc. Candidates, to allay any fears they might have, are also told that their answer would have no bearing on their chances of admission into the IITs.

Are fewer students opting for coaching ??
Over the years, 60% of the students who made it to the seven old IITs in 2007 opted for some form of coaching, and in 2008, this figure dropped to 45%, revealed the data analyzed by the IIT-JEE cell.
But, even these figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt. According to the coaching institutes, the number of students who enroll for their courses is only increasing every year and claim only past successes would compel people to join them.
They insist they tell the students not to reveal they have gone through the the centre for fear of some backlash from the IITs, who have already implemented various measures to curb the influence of these institutes such as limiting the number of attempts to only two.
Even some IIT insiders think these numbers do not reflect the reality. They suspect that even though some students do make it after studying on their own, most of them have undertaken some sort of coaching to get to the IITs.
