A smart campus that would be self sufficient in energy and water conservation would come up at the newly being established campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H). The campus would be ready by next academic year and the classes would be held on the new campus.
Modular model
“Construction is going in a modular model and as it would be taken up zone-wise the academic activity will not be affected. These buildings will have unique features such as radiant cooling systems, which provide thermal comfort while minimizing power consumption, have been incorporated in the design of buildings.
Amenities
This will be a smart campus with things such as cooling system, own power generation and water harvesting. Some of the structures will be inspiring and the students would feel that they are in the world’s best institute, which would increase their confidence levels,” Kolluru V.L. Subramaniam, Dean Planning, IITH, told The Hindu .
The IITH campus started in 2008 with a capacity of 120 students is expected to have about 1,920 students and 118 faculty members with 12 departments by the time it is shifted to the new campus in June 2014.
A committee was constituted by U.B. Desai, Director, IITH, for the smooth shifting of the institute to new campus.
The campus has long plans to establish 5 MW solar power plant to meet its own demand and addition planning for surplus generation to the grid. By the time of shifting the campus to new location an estimatedRs. 650 crore would be spent by the organisation.
“One academic building, class rooms, seminar hall, 10 hostels, each accommodating 192 students – of them two girls hostels each having a strength of 200 students would be ready,” said Mr. Desai.
Water harvesting
He said that the campus would have water harvesting for its own consumption and water treatment plant that can be used for other purposes like washing and gardening.
