Puducherry govt bans use of mobile by teachers in classrooms

The Puducherry government has banned the use of mobile phones in classrooms by teachers in government schools.
Director, school education, E Vallavan passed a circular in this regard to all schools in Puducherry. The government has already banned the use of mobile phones by students in schools.
Vallavan said teachers should hand over their mobile phones to the head of the institutions, headmasters or principals before entering the classrooms. However, they can use mobile phones during lunch breaks.
The directorate of school education decided to restrict the use of mobile phones by teachers following widespread complaints that they use mobile phones while taking classes. "We received complaints from students and parents that teachers use mobile phone in classrooms and decided to restrict teachers from using phones inside the classrooms," Vallavan said.
The directorate will form teams of inspecting officers who will make surprise visits to the schools to oversee whether the teachers comply with the orders. "The directorate will initiate stringent action against teachers who violate the order," Vallavan said.
There are about 6,000 teachers in 452 schools in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.
The Pondicherry State Students and Parents' Association welcomed the government decision and expressed optimism that the quality of education in government schools would improve. "The use of mobile phones in classrooms distracts the students and teachers alike. Moreover, the phones with cameras can be misused. We welcome the directorate's decision to ban use of mobile by teachers in classrooms," said association president Vai Bala.
The directorate has also proposed to replicate the Tamil Nadu system of monitoring attendance of teachers in the Union territory. The head of the institutions will send an SMS to an allotted number with attendance details of the teachers in the school. The system aims to prevent teachers coming late to school or disappear during school hours. The directorate is also analysing the feasibility of introducing biometric attendance register system for teachers.
