JEE 2014: No Change In Percentile System /Exam Pattern

There will be no changes in the percentile system criteria for the JEE Advanced 2014 examination. At the meeting held on August 25, 2013, the members of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) jointly resolved to continue with the controversial criteria, the cause of legal petitions which are still sub judice. The JAB meeting was held with an intention to review the eligibility norms, the exam date and the exam format for the JEE 2014 examination.

JEE 2013:
JEE 2013 was the first two tier common exam for admissions to the engineering courses across the country. JEE Main 2013, the first stage was for admissions to the NITs, CFTIs and SFTIs as well as the step to qualifying for JEE Advanced. JEE advanced was the second stage in the examination for admissions to the IITs and ISM Dhanbad. Students who qualified for JEE Advanced 2013 had to also feature amongst the top-20 percentile scorers in Class XII exams of their respective boards to be eligible for admissions to the IITs.

Controversies in JEE Advanced 2013:
79 students who had cleared both the levels of the JEE 2013 examination could not secure admissions to the IITs due to the controversial calculation of the percentile (interpreted differently by the concerned boards and IITs). Click here to check the news. The petition is still sub judice in the Supreme Court
The JAB members feel that data from 2013 is insufficient to concretely write off the system that was put in place after careful thought and consideration. The members decided that if the data in JEE 2014 also supports the claims made by the students regarding the controversial percentile system, they will revise it then. As for the students unable to get admissions, the fault according to the members lay with the students scoring less than the board cutoffs.

Same Exam Pattern for JEE 2014 too:
The JAB meeting also decided to continue with the same exam pattern for JEE 2014 as was implemented this year. This would allow for a detailed assessment of the system as per the members of the JAB.

No Increase of Shortlisted candidates for JEE Advanced 2014:
The earlier proposal doing the rounds was of increasing the shortlisted candidates for JEE Advanced 2014 to two lakhs from 1.5 lakhs as in 2013. This too was discarded as the actual admissions to the IITS are around 10,000. So it would not serve any purpose to shortlist more candidates as per the members.

Tentative Dates for JEE Main 2014 and JEE Advanced 2014:
The date for JEE Main 2014 is tentatively April 6 while the JEE Advanced 2014 date may be advanced by a week to be conducted on May 25, 2014 as per a proposal to be ratified by the IIT council along with the other issues mentioned below in detail. The IIT Council will meet on September 3, 2013 to review and pass these resolutions of the JAB. The next JAB meeting is scheduled on September 15, 2013.
