Global semesters to be conducted by IIT-Kharagpur during term breaks

Global semesters are expected to be conducted by The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur)during term breaks, as per recent plans by the premier institute. These semesters are likely to adopt the modus operandi of the summer and winter semesters held by premier universities abroad.
As per IIT officials, the planned program is expected to be held during summer as well as winter breaks, to prevent it from coinciding with the academic calendar of IIT-Kharagpur. These programs, to be held in association with foreign institutes, will enable students pursuing Bachelors of Technology (B Tech) and Masters of Technology (M Tech) programs to earn credit points, which will be included in the final scores of the candidates at the time of passing out from the institute.
As per IIT officials, IIT-Kharagpur has signed many Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with universities in countries such as Columbia, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, Russia and Germany. This is expected to augment “collaborative programs”, inviting substantial sponsorships from the corporate as well as other sectors.
The details surrounding the proposed programs have not been revealed completely as per IIT officials. IIT plans to commence the international semester programs from the next summer session.
The new management of IIT-Kharagpur remains focused on the proposed program on medical education, as well. As per institute officials, the proposal to introduce the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course is waiting for final approval from the Cabinet. Once affiliation from Medical Council of India (MCI) is obtained, IIT-Kharagpur plans to commence the MBBS course from the session of 2016-17, the officials added.
At present, discussions are being held between IIT-Kharagpur and Imperial College-London, Tata Cancer Research Centre-Kolkata and Hopkins Hospital-United States (US) to launch joint projects.
As per IIT officials, the institute will strive to shape its medical college into a model institute of innovation as well as research. The admission of doctoral students is expected to rise from the present 10% to about 30%.
The new endeavor will also enable graduates from IIT to pursue courses in medical engineering.
