JEE medical rankers in a spot for lying in applications

Several high rankers of JEE medical from the state have put themselves in a spot by declaring themselves as domicile candidates of other states in their application forms.

They had done this to increase their chances of getting admission in medical colleges in those states. But now, when they have secured high ranks, they are trying to find a berth in Bengal colleges, only to be told that they will have to wait till the merit list is exhausted and get admission only if any seat is left. What's worse, their selection in colleges of other states is also likely to be cancelled as they won't be able to produce a domicile certificate.

"We have around 2,000 seats in the undergraduate courses combining all medical colleges," said a senior health department official. "Eighty-five per cent of that is reserved for domicile candidates while the remaining is open to candidates from other states. Many students who had mentioned Bengal as their second option in the medical JEE application are now coming forward with domicile certificates, claiming to be residents of the state, to take admission in prominent government medical colleges. Some of their ranks are higher than those who had opted for Bengal as the first choice," added the official.

However, their higher ranks will be of little help. "We cannot deny admission to the 16,000 rankers who applied as domicile candidates. We have to exhaust the merit list first and if seats still remain vacant, those who had opted for other states despite being from Bengal will be considered. Though they may have higher ranks, the online counselling system cannot be disturbed at the moment," the official explained.

A source, however, said that it was unlikely that any seats will remain vacant after the merit list of 16,000 is exhausted. "We do not know how these students made such a mistake. They were probably under the impression that if they select states with good medical colleges as their resident state, admissions to those colleges will be easier. Now, when they have found that their ranks are good enough for securing admission in Bengal colleges, they are suddenly changing their minds. Even if they do find seats in good medical colleges of the states they mentioned in their form, their selection may be cancelled since they will not be able to produce a domicile certificate of that state."
