IIT-B's e-car to zoom in European tourney

A fully electric racing vehicle, EVo2 – the car designed by the IIT-B team – is the only Indian car that has both rear wheels independently powered and controlled by electronic differential.

A team of 70 design engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), has designed the country’s second electric race car. This race car will last the 22km endurance testing at Formula Student, an established educational motosport competition in Europe.
A fully electric racing vehicle, EVo2 – the car designed by the IIT-B team – is the only Indian car that has both rear wheels independently powered and controlled by electronic differential. This technology provides the required torque for each wheel and allows different wheel speeds.
The IIT-B racing team, lead by Sonam Motwani, started working on the design in July last year. They  completed designing the car in three months and finished assembling it within the next four months.
The team’s main focus was to create a racing car that had zero emission and did not harm the environment.
“There is an increasing demand for sustainable development. Belonging to a premier engineering institute of India, we felt it was our responsibility to create a vehicle that met this demand. EVo2 is a manifestation of our dreams,” team leader Motwani said, adding that EVo2 is an upgradation of its previous version, EVo1, in terms of weight reduction, acceleration, manoeuvrability and reliability.
The car is all set to represent the country at Formula Student, a competition that aims to inspire and develop young engineers. The competition demands a low-cost machine that is easy to maintain, reliable and high in performance. “Our car meets all these standards,” the IIT-B team said confidently.
The electric car has undergone rigorous testing in the past 20 days. Its top speed is 100kmph and needs to be charged for three hours.
EVo2 was launched at the VMCC auditorium at IIT-B on Monday by Prabal Sarma, the  consulting director at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
The event was followed by a presentation by NRB Bearings, the chief sponsor of EVo2.
EVo2 will compete with 141 other such innovations at the competition in July this year.
“We look forward to having an amazing run at the Formula Student 2013 event and make the country proud by waving the Indian Flag at the finish line,” the team said.
