Two best practices being applied for bringing in class XII boards’ marks

The Joint
Entrance Examination
Interface Group (JIG) has
taken the best of two
procedures for normalizing
the variation in class XII
marks across several state
boards and bringing them at
par with each other in the
best possible way.
Instead of relying on one
procedure alone, JIG —
consisting of B N Jain, vice-
chancellor, BITS, Pilani; Ayan
Basu of Indian Statistical
Institute, Kolkata; Dheeraj
Sanghi, IIT, Kanpur; Pankaj
Jalote, director, IIT; Delhi and
P D Porey of S V National
Institute of Technology,
Surat — decided that for this
academic session, 50% of
board marks would be
normalized by equating
percentile amongst different
boards and anchoring them
to All India JEE-Main
percentiles, and 50% be
normalized by equating each
board's percentile with JEE
(Main) percentile marks of
respective boards.
JIG came up with a slightly
varied formulation because it
felt the class XII result data
pertained to last year and
students were not aware
that the board examination
will count towards their final
rank in the All Indian
Engineering Entrance
Examination, which has now
been renamed JEE Main. JIG
felt that in this academic
session, when students
know about the value being
put on board marks could
present a different scenario.
JIG also felt the two
procedures may have certain
biases that need to be
minimized. JIG also factored in
variation in the size of
boards, from hundreds to
lakhs. Variation was also
found in examination and
evaluation patterns of
boards.
The first procedure takes
note of aggregate marks
obtained by each student in
JEE-Main, computes the
percentile of each student on
the basis of aggregate
marks in his own board
computed from the list of five
specified subjects. JEE-Main
aggregate mark
corresponding to percentile
at the all-India level is
considered as the normalized
board score of the students.
The second procedure also
notes down the aggregate
marks obtained by each
student in JEE-main.
Percentile of each student is
computed on the basis of
aggregate marks in his own
board computed from five
specified subjects. The
percentile is computed among
all students of the board
whose subject combination
meet the eligibility criteria of
JEE-Main. JEE-Main
aggregate marks
corresponding to percentile
among the set of aggregate
scores obtained in the JEE-
Main by the students of the
board is considered the
normalized board score of
the student.
