The IIT JEE is difficult if
you don’t study for it
but if you study for it, it
then becomes slightly
less difficult for you. In
this section we arr
going to tell you that
how you should study
for IIT JEE. For some
more information, you
can also visit the next 4
sections.
Studying for IIT JEE Can
be divided into 5 Parts
1. When to begin your
IIT JEE Preparation
2. Planning your course
3. When to study
4. Where to study
5. How to Study
1. When to begin
your IIT JEE
Preparation
The most important
thing is when to begin
your preparation for IIT
JEE. Class XI ? Class XII ?
After passing out Class
XII ? - these are some
of the options which
start to revolve in the
students minds. We at
IIT JEE Guidance
consider the ideal time
for starting your IIT JEE
preparations after
getting your Class X
Board examinations
results, because that is
the time when you
finally start thinking of
your career and also
decide upon your
stream in Class XI.
Although that is the
time to start your IIT
JEE preparation, but you
have to start building up
your base right from
Class IX. There is a lot
of difference between
Class X and Class XI in
syllabus, course
patterns, etc. And
many of the students
are not able to cope up
with this sudden
change. We at IIT JEE
Guidance suggest you
that once you reach
Class IX, you should
start studying beyond
your school books and
course books in Physics,
Chemistry and Maths.
As most of the topics
in Class XI and Class XII
are basically more
detailed versions of the
topics you study in
Class IX or Class X, so
when the topics are
being covered in your
school or tuition, you
can come home and
read the topic in a more
detailed way from the
Class XI or Class XII
books.
If a student is able to
do the above, he feels a
lesser change from
Class X to Class XI and
Class XI and Class XII
begin to look a bit easy
for him. Once Class XI
and Class XII become to
look a bit easy, the
student can read the
topics of Class XI and
Class XII from books of
higher level. Higher level
here means
introductory college
level. By reading these
higher level books, the
student ultimately
starts to prepare for
the IIT JEE.
2. Planning your
course
The next important
thing is to plan your
course. However, as it
is also important to co-
ordinate IIT JEE with
your school syllabus and
your studying for the
Class XII board
examinations, So, we
suggest that you follow
this studying pattern if
you are starting your
preparations after
getting your Class X
board examination
results.
As you get your Class X
board examination
results in end of May/
Early June, so now in

3. When to Study
The next important
thing is when to study -
In this case it has been
found out that many
students, no matter
what so ever exam it
may be, they generally
tend to destroy their
sleep and study at night
from 10 P.M. to 2 A.M.
However, this is bad as
the student after doing
all his activities in the
day, feels tired at night
and during studying at
night, he is unable to
concentrate. We at IIT
JEE Guidance, suggest
that during holidays,
study during the day
time and on school
days, study in the
evening but not at
night.
Also sleep for atleast 7
- 8 hours in the night so
that you wake up fresh.
You can sleep from 10
P.M. to 6 A.M. (8 hours)
irrespective of whether
the day is a school day
or a holiday. Wake up by
6 A.M. latest so that
you can exercise a little.
Also go out for a walk
to turn a bit fresh. Do
make exercising and
going for a morning
walk a habit everyday in
the morning. Exercising
coupled with a 10
minute walk is a must
for students. All this is
important for students
to build concentration.
After doing all this, do
not forget to take a
small 10 minute bath in
the morning so as to
turn totally fresh. Then
study from 6:30 A.M. to
8:30 A.M, During the
day, always study, no
matter what you study
from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
taking a short 10
minute break every
hour or so and recall
important points when
you sit after that. We
at IIT JEE Guidance have
suggested you the time
of 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. as
most of the exams
happen during this time
and you can reserve
your best for this time.
About school days, as
you generally return
home by 3 P.M., so take
a short 1 minute bath,
after returning so that
you turn totally fresh
before you take lunch.
After luch, take a short
rest before you start
studying at 4 P.M. Also
go out to play in the
evenings for 1 hour, this
playing thing in the
evenings will make you
stay fresh and healthy.
Avoid being a total
Bookworm, be a
bookworm, but not too
much.
4. Where to Study
The next important
thing is where to study
- Generally students are
unable to concentrate.
The reason is that they
don’t tend to sit in a
quiet room, we at IIT
JEE Guidance suggest
that you should find a
very quiet room in your
house, take all your
books and notebooks
into that room and put
a notice board of KEEP
QUIET or something like
that on the door of that
room. Also put a
NOTICE BOARD inside
that room. Incase such
a room is unavailable,
then sit in the room
with least disturbance
in your home and study
there.
5. How to Study
The next important
thing is how to study -
For studying the most
important thing you
need is concentration.
Do concentrate on what
you are studying and
don't forget to write
down the important
points while you are
studying. Revise them
afterwards when you
wake up from your
studies. Also solve a lot
of numerical problems
as it gives you a lot of
practice. Also don’t
forget to look at our
sample papers.
We at IIT JEE Guidance
have found out that a
lot os students have
problems on
concentration. Lack of
concentration is almost
a very common problem
amongst students
nowadays. For building
concentration, the most
important thing is that
you should follow
everything which we
gave you under the
topic "When to Study".
If you are able to follow
it, you will be able to
develop high levels of
concentration. The
problem of
concentration generally
arises as students
nowadays do not follow
the things which we at
IIT JEE Guidance gave
under that topic.
Concentration is
important for studying
as it helps in increasing
the efficiency of your
study. Studying for 1
hour with full
concentration is like
studying for 4 hours
without concentration.
Concentration can help
you build a 99%
efficiency in your
studying. If you are able
to study with full
concentration, you will
never forget what you
studied. It can also
make studying fun and
enjoyable. By doing all
this, we at IIT JEE
Guidance believe that
the student will actually
enjoy studying.
