IIT students develop underwater robot

Giving a major fillip to
the Indian Navy’s
underwater
surveillance, a group of
students of IIT
Bombay has
conceptualised a multi-
utility underwater robot
as part of a research
project sponsored by
NIRDESH(National
Institute for Research
and Development in
Defence Shipbuilding).
This is for the first
time in the country that
such a device has been
developed for defence
purpose, defence
sources said. To be
named ‘Matsya’, the
prototype of the robot
would be submitted to
NIRDESH by September
2013. On the technical
side, having equipped
with cameras onboard,
‘Matsya’ can be used to
assess damage of the
ships underwater and
monitor the functioning
of the propellers. The
robot also comes with
the facility for carrying
out underwater welding
if required. As far as
the security aspects
are concerned, the
robot would be a shot in
the arm for defence
vessels for underwater
surveillance as well as
for commando
operations.
In a bid to tap the
research and
development potential
among students,
NIRDESH had invited
projects from IIT
Bombay and Delhi. Of
the seven proposals
submitted, the technical
sub-committee of
NIRDESH has given a
green signal to the
‘underwater robot’
project submitted by
team ‘Matysa’ of IIT
Bombay. The group
comprises students
from various disciplines
including Material
Science, Computer
Science, Aerospace
Engineering and
Mechanical Engineering.
NIRDESH, the mega
defence undertaking, is
being established at
Chaliyam in Kozhikode
as part of the
indigenisation efforts of
the Navy and is aimed
at promoting research
and development in
warship design and
thereby developing an
indigenous capability to
design each and every
equipment required for
warship building.
Mazagon Dock Limited,
Mumbai, which has been
entrusted with the
responsibility of building
the Nirdesh
infrastructure, has
recently issued tenders
for consultancy to
prepare a Master Plan
and Detailed Project
Report(DPR).
Tender enquiries were
issued on May 10 to 17
consultants who had
been short-listed from
the 22 firms, which had
expressed interest in
the project.
