The Blockbuster Story of Kota

Image
Rajasthan’s Kota continues its winning streak in training students for success in pre-engineering and pre-medical college entrance tests Getting into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is harder than admission to America’s Ivy League: each year more than a million students take the entrance examination for a meagre 8,622 seats in the 16 IITs. It is equally difficult to get into country’s premier medical school: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has only 72 undergraduate seats and more than 500,000 students vie for it. Of course, there are more engineering and medical seats in the country, but IITs and AIIMS Delhi remain the most sought after. Almost one in every three youths who make it to these premier technical and medical schools are students from cram schools in Kota, a riverbank town 256 kilometres south of Jaipur in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. Kota’s success in these entrance exams has been stuff of legend as the coaching bu...

IIT Suicide case- Madras student of kota hangs himself

A first-year student of chemical engineering committed suicide in his hostel room at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Friday night. The 18-year-old student, Akshay Kumar Meena, from Kota in Rajasthan, was found hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his room in Pampa Hostel, IIT officials said. They said it was not immediately clear what provoked Meena to commit suicide as he did not leave behind a suicide note. This is the third suicide of a student in an IIT Madras hostel in the past two years. Meena joined the institution in July 2013. His friends and hostel-mates said they did not notice anything out of the usual in Meena's behaviour and they could not think of any reason why he would kill himself. "He was very active in student groups and participated in events in the hostels," a friend said, requesting that his name not be revealed. "He was not bad at studies." Meena made a call to his father at 8.30pm. "His father said there was nothin...

How to make good facebook page ??

Image
Steps :- 1. Be consistent. Post every single day. Whether you post once, or ten times, is truly up to you. Regardless of how many times you choose to post, be consistent with it. 2. Reply to people. Most pages never reply to people. Replying to people makes your readers feel more involved in what you do. 3. Reward your readers. Featuring a "reader of the month" is a good idea to give back, as well as give people a motive to read. 4. Use other social media accounts. If your Twitter or Tumblr is popular, why not promote your Facebook on there? 5. Use Facebook social plugins on your website. If you have a website, you can integrate Facebook social plugins to encourage connections. These plugins include (but are not limited to) Facebook’s like box, like button, and comment section. 6. Remind your readers to like and share. Try to encourage your readers to like and share whenever you can. Reminding your readers to like and share in every single post can come off as...

How Panjab University cracked the Times Higher Education list ??

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh , astronaut Kalpana Chawla and scientist Yash Pal are among its most illustrious alumni. And yet, when Panjab University found itself at the 239th spot on the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings , ahead of institutions including IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, many eyebrows were raised. For, Panjab University, established in 1882, had not featured among the top 500 universities in the QS World University rankings published in September this year. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and THE rankings are considered the benchmark indices for the top universities in the world. In fact, the ministry of human resources development (MHRD) had to face a lot of criticism when the QS rankings were published last month as none of the Indian educational institutions figured in the top 200 rankings. What seemed to have tilted the scales in favour of Panjab University in the THE rankings is the agency’s stress on citation, which is considered the single biggest and most infl...

Students stump JEE-2013 examiners, skip maximum math questions

Image
The answer booklets of the IIT joint entrance exam (advanced) this year have thrown up a worrisome trend: the maximum questions unanswered were from mathematics. Perhaps as a consequence, the highest overall score for JEE-2013 stood at 332 of 360. At 92.2%, it is quite a slide from last year's 96%. The lowest mark scored this year is minus 70. With quantitative skills - involving using or manipulating numbers; the ability to reason using numbers - an absolute essential in the country's top tech schools, there is a feeling that math should be accorded priority in the testing process. Now, the JEE (advanced) comprises of two papers with questions from physics, chemistry and math, in that order. "Considering the fact that quantitative skills are an extremely important component of the testing process, it is proposed to change this order to mathematics, followed by physics and then chemistry," said the IIT-JEE (advanced) 2013 report. "We have noticed ...

What IIT means to HIM: A 16-year-old's tale

I am a 16-year-old-student, about to begin class XII, and I'm preparing for all the engineering entrance exams for 2013. I have been sure of my career choice for nearly four years now, and have always enjoyed learning and building my knowledge. Here is my opinion on the change in the IIT entrance pattern, as well as the years that build up to taking these examinations. The Indian Institutes of Technology are India's pride, the apple of the Indian eye. They are revered for the standards they have set for Indian education. Respect is synonymous with IIT, because every Indian knows the levels of effort put in, and knowledge attained, by individuals who make it to the IITs.  Today, we are talking of changing the system of selecting students who deserve to enter these institutes. We are debating and shouting and screaming and slamming. Slamming each other, the government, the ministries, the school education system, and the coaching classes. And in a gigantic oversight, we have fa...

IIT-JEE 2013: Analysis of JEE (Advanced)

There has been a call to make Mathematics the first section in the JEE (Advanced) exam as students did not score well in this section. Mathematics is currently the last section in the exam. An  IIT-JEE  (advanced) report suggested Mathematics should be followed by Physics and Chemistry. Reports claimed that students had left out the maximum number of questions in Mathematics leading to concerns as numerical abilities are very important in Engineering. JEE (Advanced) has negative marking. One and a half lakh students who had qualified from JEE (Mains) sat for the exam. Here is an analysis of JEE (Advanced) 2013: Marks analysis Total marks: 360 Highest mark: 332 Lowest mark: minus 70 Number of students scoring over 300 marks: 23 Number of students scoring over 250 marks: 326 Students taking IIT-JEE for the first time Percentage of students who took JEE for the first time in 2013: 69.6% Percentage of students who took JEE for the first time in 2012: 80% Institu...
