NIT Rourkela centre in Bhubaneswar

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, will soon have an extension centre in the city for the institute's non-classroom activities.

The state government has decided to allot a one-acre plot for the proposed building at Chandrasekhapur at a nominal ground rent of Rs 300 per year. NIT has to complete construction on the centre within three years, a state government order issued on April 24 said.

Confirming the institute's plan for the city, NIT director Sunil Sarangi said Bhubaneswar being well-connected by air, rail and road with other parts of the country, a centre in the state capital would help NIT undertake several activities through the extension campus here.

The institute will formalize its exact construction plan after meeting the statutory requirements in phases, he said.

Sarangi said NIT has been conducting numerous short-term courses for teachers of engineering colleges.

Since a substantial number of the colleges are concentrated in and around Bhubaneswar, it will be easier for the premier institute to reach out to them through the new campus.

It would also be handy for NIT to conduct certain international conferences and interface with the government through the Bhubaneswar centre because of its location advantage.

Visitors to NIT Rourkela, who come via Bhubaneswar, can be better coordinated by the Bhubaneswar campus, which will also have a guest house, he said.

For meeting the industry leaders and for coordinating campus hiring, Bhubaneswar will have an added advantage, the NIT boss said.

The main campus of NIT Rourkela consisting of the institute buildings, hostels and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land.

In another development, the institute will add two-year MSc in applied geology course from the coming academic year.

"The programme will have an intake capacity of 30 students," the NIT director said. Besides the BTech and MTech courses, NIT offers MSc in physics, chemistry, mathematics and life sciences.

Admission to all MSc courses of NIT Rourkela will be through IIT JAM (joint entrance for MSc), the all India examination conducted by IIT this year unlike previous years when it conducted its own admission test for PG admission, Sarangi said.
