Image
IIT-Bombay continues to be the top choice for the best of the young brains in the country. The institute has retained its position as the most sought-after IIT in the country, with Delhi and Chennai coming a distant second and third. A number of factors have been responsible for this, ranging from importance given to streams over geography, from placement records to newer short-term courses on offer, tell students. Of the top 100 rankers in JEE-Advanced 2014, almost all have opted for IIT-B computer science as their first choice. But 58 were allotted seats at IIT-B in computer science in the first round, followed by Delhi, where 36 of the top 100 have been admitted (see box). "We are working on the operational prototype of a four-legged robot that consists of a chassis and can be used at the forefront of war areas, for instance to carry weapons," P.M. Pathak, associate professor in the mechanical engineering department, told IANS. "Even if one limb is hit by a bullet, the robot can continue to function on the remaining three limbs, and even of two," explained Divye Anand, a third year student in the robotics department. Some students are working on a robotic arm that resembles a human arm with flexible finger-like extensions that can be used to pick up, hold or even push objects. What is IIT Roorkee lipstick competition or scandal ??

We all know about the infamous lipstick scandal at IIT Roorkee and government ordering a probe. Why so much fuss was there against this normal college prank? Or was it really shameful on our part to conduct such an event? The tragedy of people in their 20s is that while the society expects them to be independent, mature, responsible, and everything else you would associate with being an adult, their lives continue to be decided and governed to a significant extent by people in their 40s or older.  They live in a world whose laws are made, at best, by the generation before theirs, and at worst, by people who lived decades ago. While they are drivers of social change, they also have to bear the residual effect of whatever the generation before theirs thought was acceptable. It's the best of times; it's the worst of times. The IIT Roorkee lipstick brouhaha is just another in the series of incidents resulting from the perennial conflict between the old and the new. Usually,...
