Ninety per cent undergraduate students at IIT-Roorkee received campus placement offers this year from globally renowned companies, with the highest international placement offer standing at Rs 73 lakh. As many as 1,047 out of 1,631 students registered at the institute got job offers from global giants like Google and Microsoft through campus interviews which took place for the first time in the history of the institution, a release from IIT-Roorkee said here today. The highest salary package among international offers stood at Rs 73 lakh while the one in domestic category stood at Rs 32 lakh, it said. 171 companies have already visited the campus (till date) for the Campus Recruitment Programme this year, it said. Four IIT-Delhi final-year students, who were on a road trip to west Rajasthan to celebrate their placements, were killed and two other students injured when the Innova they were travelling in overturned near Jaisalmer on Sunday morning. The students were returning after camping out at Sam and were 5km from Jaisalmer when one of the tyres burst, resulting in the vehicle rolling over several times. While three students died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The Innova driver and two students — a girl and a boy — were being treated at MDM hospital in Jodhpur and were reported to be stable. The deceased have been identified as Pallav Aggarwal from Chattisgarh, Bihar resident Archana Mandal, Diksha Gautam from Delhi and Mayank Goel. The highest offer was a Rs. 1.3-crore package from an international company Tech giant Cognizant came up with 27 offers — the maximum by a company — at the placement season of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), this year. At the end of the first phase of the placement drive that began on December 1 last year, 906 offers were made by 231 companies that visited the campus. A total of 786 students have been placed so far. The IITs have jointly decided to not reveal the names of the students with the highest offers. However, the highest offer was a Rs. 1.3-crore per annum package. Eight students received offers worth more than Rs. 77 lakh per annum from international companies, mostly based in the United States. The highest domestic offer this year was of Rs. 48.68 lakh per annum, and 35 students received offers above Rs. 20 lakh per annum.                                        Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will establish an  entrepreneurship centre  in its premises, with funds received from Syntel co-founders Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi, under the aegis of the Desai Sethi Family Foundation (DS Foundation). The new centre, to be named Desai Sethi Centre for Entrepreneurship, will foster entrepreneurship and technology innovation through new programmes for education and research, multi disciplinary courses, research labs and partnerships. Students will also receive mentorship from  IIT Bombay  faculty and guest faculty from global institutions.                                              This placement season is proving to be a winner at IIT-G, with the institution showing a  remarkable  improvement in offers. Information made available by IIT-G's training and placement cell stated that over 400 students have been offered jobs since December last year, with the highest package being 125,000 USD. "Despite recession,  IIT-G  has been able to attract companies. This season, the placement team faced difficulties but the hard work paid off and individual branches registered commendable improvement. Many firms have shown an interest in conducting on-campus recruitments, including a number of PSUs," said Natesan Srinivasan, faculty in charge at IIT-G's training and placement cell. IIT-Kharagpur has set a record with more than a thousand of its students securing cushy jobs in the first phase of campus placements, officials said on Wednesday. Around 1,010 students received job offers in the first round of placements, which ended in December, from big names like Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Shell, Deutsche Bank, ITC, Schlumberger, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Abbott and EXL, to start-ups like Flipkart and Housing.com.  IIT-Mumbai came second with 900 offers, followed by IIT-Delhi (750) and IIT-Kanpur (700). The highest package offered was from a US-based company, which signed an IITian for an annual salary of $1.25 million (around `77 lakh). The highest domestic package was Rs 37 lakh. Two new dual degree programmes — Financial Engineering and Engineering Entrepreneurship — proved to be a big hit, with 85 per cent students from these courses being placed.

Where is the country's top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? Samsung,  Reliance Industries  (RIL),  Oracle  and  Flipkart  topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top IITs at the end of the first phase of this placement season. With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest recruiter,  Samsung  is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in Korea. The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. More than twelve students at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur here have bagged a package of Rs 1 crore or more during an ongoing placement drive. There are dozens of students who have bagged a package between 30 lakh to 75 lakh rupees per annum, head of IIT placement centre Vimal Kumar said on Wednesday. However, he refused to give details of the package. In the last 15 days, 675 students have got job offer letters. The first phase of the placement drive would end on December 22 and the second phase would start from January 5, he said. Around 200 companies have already participated in placement drive while 15 to 20 more companies are expected to come. The ongoing campus placement drive at IIT-Kanpur, so far, has been able to provide jobs to about 55% of the total students registered with the placement cell of the institute. In the first 10 days of the drive, 510 students received job offers from the recruiting companies and by Saturday last, 440 students had received offer letters from companies. According to Prof Vimal Kumar, placement incharge of IIT-Kanpur, the core engineering sector has emerged as the largest employer by hiring the maximum number of students, followed by software firms and analytical companies.  Placements at the new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are headed for a bumpy ride. Behind the excitement of the big companies and bigger offers on campus lurk serious concerns: companies staying away, students in certain streams facing a struggle to get placed and the challenge of placing bigger batches at a time when recruiters are hiring in lower numbers.  Most of these IITs are apprehensive about how placements will pan out given that a number of recruiters - particularly among public sector undertakings (PSUs) - are staying away.  IOC, BPCL, HPCL,  ONGC ,  Power Grid Corporation of India  are among those that have hired in good numbers in the past, but have not sent out feelers this time round. Not all engineering students wish to do engineering throughout their life, not even IITians. Four out of 10 students are taking up jobs which are unrelated to their core subject. Instead of the manufacturing sector, a majority of techies are choosing diverse fields like consultancy, e-commerce, software and others.  The reason: Core engineering jobs offer lesser packages as compared to some other fields. Moreover, postings in core engineering jobs or the manufacturing sector are mainly in smaller cities while consultancy, e-commerce, IT and online ventures offer jobs in metros. The campus placement drive at IIT-Kanpur has been a success as 415 students of the institute found placement in the first six days of the ongoing drive. On the sixth day alone, 65 students got job offers from the participating companies. Prof Vimal Kumar, placement incharge of IIT-Kanpur expressed hope that the seventh day of the drive will also yield good results and a good number of students will get offer letters from the recruiting firms. He added that from December 10 onwards, the Public Sector Units (PSUs) will also come to IIT-Kanpur for conducting interviews of the students. Microsoft recruited nine students at the IIT-B campus placements–five for US and four for India. Post-midnight developments at the premier IIT-Bombay campus, early on Monday, left several students thrilled. High-profile companies not just offered seriously high pay packets, they also went in for bulk hires on campus.
