In the last few years, close to Rs 4 crore has been disbursed to 187 faculty members who have joined IIT Bombay as part of an initiative to attract the best talent. To help the institute sustain this scheme, the 1988 batch has decided to fund the initiative as part of its legacy project. The class of 1988, which is getting together on December 27 for its silver jubilee reunion, has pledged Rs 2.5 crore towards the legacy project. Under the "new faculty sign-on bonuses", started few years ago, a joining bonus of Rs 4 lakh is given to every new member hired at IIT Bombay over four years. "Sir, since I joined in 2009, every year there has been a suicide. As a student I have the right to know about IIT-M's actions to prevent such unfortunate incidents. A study done by a private firm has ranked IIT-Madras as the leader in faculty awards for rese­arch activities. Zinnov, a globalisation and market expansion advisory firm, on Friday released its latest study titled “Top research faculty in tier-1 engineering institutions in India”. According to the study, IIT-Madras emerged as the overall leader in bagging top awards for its faculty research with about 15 coveted achievements and awards like IEEE fellowship and Bhatnagar awards; over 60 international awards and fellowships including Humboldt fellowship, grants from multi national companies; and more than 40 national awards and fellowships. This study includes a detailed assessment of faculty in India’s tier-I engineering institutions and also identified top faculty by their areas of research.
