What makes IITs different from Other Colleges ??

Let me make it easier for you, muggle.

Admission to IIT is extremely selective, in that children who show magical ability will automatically gain a place through a process called the JEE, and squibs cannot attend the school as students (though they can work there in other roles).

These magical schools are generally setup far away in the country side, hidden from the view from ordinary muggles, in places like Kharagpur or Roorkee, though some schools chose to be more accommodating. Each school has its own culture, tradition and history with the oldest being most respectable because of  the contributions of past students in creating magic in the entire fraternity.

Lets create some magic now !

Let this guy be our average IITian

Having little or no idea what his magic is worth, and having spent most of his life in a closet under the stairs in places like Kota, there is nothing that could make him happier than catching a train to an altogether different world.

The institute is larger than any he's ever seen, with lakes (IITB) and forbidden forests (IITM), everything seems larger than life. He gets to meet people from all over the country, each with a story of his own and yet there is magic is each and every one of them. IITs give this guy what he's wanted all his life, a little air to breathe. Well that's what he thinks right now atleast.

Soon the classes begin, and our little guy realises that he has lots to learn. There are innumerable kinds of magic, from making weird potions (Chemistry) to making things fly (aeronautical), there's so much this place has to offer. With more classes than most could bear, each day becomes a humbling experience as he finds that the magic him has suddenly become ordinary. With so many talented people around him, each with his own share of brilliance, life becomes drag for the most part as the little guy tries to find his calling at other places on the campus.

And then he does. Not somewhere he expected, but at an activity that he was born to do (Sports,Cultural, Robotics ? ). He soars, as others look on.

To help him there's always that grey bearded oldie, who's been at this place all his life, seen students come and go each year. Serving as a professor just because he loves students, he recognizes the magic in this little fellow and shows him the importance of what he must do, helps him in his cause and believes he might things for the better in the magical world. Grey haired, a little lost in themselves, but a spark in the eye for their work, that what makes students fond of them and the good thing is that there are plenty out here.

So what makes IITs different ; Magic

In the people, in the friends,in the not-friends, in the professors, in the sheer no. of opportunities you have at this place, academic and otherwise, and  in the grinding competition in every fucking direction. This places takes you in, and then takes your sleep away, asks you do an inhumane number of things, makes a humble man out of the arrogant kid who once stepped in.

The best part is this 'magic' stays with the students even after they make a transition to the the ordinary world, as people from these schools continue to bump into each other, each immensely proud of the fact nothing is impossible for them, even if they end up working with goblins in a bank, which more often they do these days.
