Students Say Online Version of JEE Mains was Easier..!!!

                              Online JEE Mains

Students who took the computer-based JEE test on Wednesday were a tad luckier than the offline test takers with straightforward questions in mathematics and chemistry and a comparatively simpler Physics paper.

After the written model of the exam was completed on Sunday, the first online Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Mains, 2014, was held on Wednesday in different centres across the nation. Three more online tests will be held on April 11, 12 and 19 to cater to the around 5 lakh students appearing for the computer-based examinations, which is their gateway to undergraduate engineering programmes in the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally-funded technical institutions in the country.

Most students said the chemistry and mathematics papers in the online exam were simpler than the offline test model. "Except for a few toughies in chemistry, the exams were easy," said Narayanan V Baradwaj, a student of DAV Boys Senior Secondary School in Gopalapuram.

With direct questions from NCERT books used by students under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to those picked from previous years' papers, the chemistry and mathematics papers were a cakewalk for many students in the city.

While the Physics question paper in the written test was lengthier and difficult, it was comparatively easier in the computer-based exam, said T R Subramaniam, director of TRS IIT Classes and a mathematics professor. "The exams followed last year's trend and this was the general feedback from students," said Subramaniam.

Students said the online pattern helped them focus better on the examination as they didn't have to worry about shading the correct answers with attention, as required by the written test.

Sometimes, improper shading is counted as wrong answer and students could get negative marks, said Srikrishnan Subramanian who took the test on Wednesday. "The only disadvantage is that you can't skim through questions online like you can do in a written test. Otherwise, there was no technical glitch and it was comfortable taking the online test," said Subramanian.

Many students from the city travelled to Pondicherry, Madurai and Coimbatore to take the written test on Sunday. The centres for the computer-based exams, too, are located in engineering colleges that are located well outside the city in areas such as Sriperumbudur, Kundrathur and Avadi making it difficult for students to commute for the exams that begin by 9.30am.

The results of the exam will be announced on May 3 after which the top 1.5 lakh students will take the JEE Advanced on May 25 to seek entry in the IITs. Till 2012, students had to take the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) for the NITs and the IIT-JEE for the IITs. The common model of JEE Mains was introduced last year.
