Why Entrance exams send parents into Excitement and Frustration ??

M Shanthi, a resident of Anna Nagar has already spent two sleepless nights as her son M Rajesh was to face a written examination for school admission in a government-aided school on Wednesday. Her anxiety would prevail for the next two days until the school administration announces the results. And all this anxiety is to gain admission for Class 1 in a prominent aided school in the city. Rajesh's parents have been desperate to get admission in that particular school since their elder son is already studying Class 6 there and it would be easier for them to arrange for transport.

Like Shanthi, a large number of parents in the city are undergoing sleepless nights aiming for a school of their choice. Every year, LKG admission in reputed private and government-aided schools is a herculean task for the parents. With the admission season on, parents start struggling to get seats in schools of their choice and throng them. Many schools witness parents queuing up in the last few weeks for application forms and admissions.

"We got up at 4am today (Wednesday) to help my son prepare for the entrance exam. We are sure about the questions. We have taught our son alphabets, fruits and vegetable names and basics of maths. We hope our son would get through," said J Babu of K Pudur.

Parents even conducted special poojas in temple for their children's success. "We went to temple early in the morning before the entrance examination which concluded a week back. Fortunately, my daughter has secured a seat. There are many parents who lamented that their wards did not get through. The schools follow the practice since they get so much of applications. They want to filter to the best students," said S Rajkumar, secretary of a parent teacher association from S S Colony.

"We wonder how they can test a five-year-old's potential in a written test. Many students would develop their attention towards studies only after the stage," rued M Manikandan, a parent who could not get a seat in the school of his choice. When contacted, educational officials said that no school should carry out such practice. They would look into the issue, they promised.
