JEE MAINS 2014 ANSWER KEY: 1,100 challenges made to answer keys

Around 1,100 engineering aspirants from around the country challenged the answer key of the Joint Entrance Exam (Main) question papers uploaded online by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Monday evening. While students claimed they were given less than 24 hours for the review, which was insufficient, the board said it was just an additional facility offered for the first time.

The board released the answer key around 8pm on Monday, though it was supposed to put it up on the JEE (Main) website at 2pm. Students were supposed to get around 27 hours to study the key, but got six hours less. Only 1,106 students challenged the key till 5pm on Tuesday. "We do not know if the board will accept these challenges. Even if they do, there is hardly any time left for them to consider them," said an engineering aspirant from Andheri. The results are expected to be announced on Saturday.

Another student noted that every mark counts as only the top 1.5 lakh students from JEE (Main) get shortlisted for JEE (Advanced), meant for admissions to IITs. JEE (Main) scores along with class XII marks are taken into account for admissions to engineering colleges across the country.

Praveen Tyagi from IITians' Pace said, "It is unfair to students. The board has been informed about the errors in some questions. They should either nullify these or give grace marks to all students." He claimed that there was ambiguity in the questions and the board delayed the process to cover up for the errors.

CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi claimed there was no delay in publishing the answer key. "It was an additional facility that we offered for the first time. We have received representations from many people. Our subject experts have gone through the claims and they have not found the questions erroneous."

Joshi added that the questions challenged on Monday will again be presented before the subject experts. "There will not be any delay in the announcement of the results on Saturday. We have to submit the results to the IITs since they wanted to start their process a bit early." Joshi said that if the challenges are proven true, a modified answer key will be released for everybody.
