55% students get jobs at IIT-Kanpur placement drive

The ongoing campus placement drive at IIT-Kanpur, so far, has been able to provide jobs to about 55% of the total students registered with the placement cell of the institute. In the first 10 days of the drive, 510 students received job offers from the recruiting companies and by Saturday last, 440 students had received offer letters from companies.

According to Prof Vimal Kumar, placement incharge of IIT-Kanpur, the core engineering sector has emerged as the largest employer by hiring the maximum number of students, followed by software firms and analytical companies.

Kumar said by December 15 and 16, the Public Sector Units (PSUs) will also come to the campus tro participate in the placement drive. He said normally the software companies are considered as the largest employers but contrary to the concept the core engineering sector hired the maximum students. The core engineering sector companies picked students from mechanical, chemical and civil engineering departments. Last year also, the core engineering sector companies provided placement to maximum number of students, he said.

The second highest number of students was picked up by software firms and analytics and the third largest employers were the banking and consulting companies.

Prof Kumar further added that Airbus picked two students for placement, Samsung Korea selected 20 and DAR Group offered job to six students this year. Similarly, among the software firms so far, Flipkart has given job offers to 40 students, EXL Technologies have hired some 34 students and Genpact, an outsourcing firm, has recruited 23 students of IIT-Kanpur in past two days.

According to placement incharge of IIT-Kanpur, a total of 1,104 students had registered with the placement cell this year out of which only 979 students uploaded their resumes. Around 55% students of the institute have been recruited so far and for remaining 45% of the students, the recruitment firms and companies are still coming in, he added further.

Prof Kumar also informed that on receiving job offers from two companies, the student is provided 24 hours to think and decide on one of the offers, which is considered his final decision. Prof Kumar said that companies including Infosys Research and Development, TCS, Cape Gemini, DRDO and few others are to come to the campus fro recruitments.
