Panjab University beats IITs, enters top 400 club in THE World University Rankings 2013-14



Panjab University has for the first time broken into the top 400 club in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-14, well ahead of the four IITs.


Last year, only two Indian institutes made it to the top 400. Making its debut in the elite club, Panjab University joins the group of universities ranked between 226 and 250, putting it way ahead of its closest Indian rival IIT Delhi, which is in the 351-400 group. The other new entrant, besides these two, is IIT Kanpur, which falls in the 351-400 band.

The other two Indian institutes are IIT Kharagpur, which has slipped from 226-250 to the 351-400 group, and IIT Roorkee, which stays, like last year, in the 351-400 bracket.

"Though the IITs have done well in certain disciplines in other earlier rankings, neither the IITs nor the IIMs are multi-disciplinary institutes. However, that's no excuse to slip up in these rankings. IITs need to do better by focusing on aspects like research output," said MM Pallam Raju, Union minister of human resource development, commenting on the IITs faring poorly in the global rankings.

While Panjab University has not fared well on research either, it has done well in citation impact. "Panjab University receives very good scores for citation impact, which means that its academics are producing research which is widely used and valued by the academic community around the world," said Phil Baty, editor, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in a written response to ET.

According to THE World University Rankings 2013-14 data, Panjab University has scored 84.7 on citations, 29.3 on international outlook, 28.4 on industry income, 25.8 on teaching and 14.0 on research. According to Baty, Indian institutions have engaged better this year.

The Most Brilliant Students of Kota Ever

Anuj Nagpal(AIR 190):  This guy was the most intelligent person I ever met. In hostel, he was one of the most fun loving guys, he only used to do the assignments of mathematics (only because it was taught to us by the director of the coaching). Though I was not in his hostel but my closest friends were in his hostel and used to tell me all the stuff they did at night. How much You can get by Selling your IIT JEE RANK ??

Shubham Tulsiani says This is quite a common practice among institutes so I would like to address the trends too apart from the personal experiences and I'll also write on one aspect the question didn't explicitly ask  - offers  before  JEE Pre-JEE (class 12th) I had a couple of 'offers' - Some people from Akash Institute came over to my place to 'gift' me books to help me prepare for JEE. All I had to do was - guess what - yes, sign a form ! I was amazed at how insistent they were and despite me saying I didnt need the books and wouldn't sign,  they made me keep the books. They then visited / called me about 5 more times to get my signature (until I finally returned the unused books on their last visit and told my hostel guard to not allow them back).
