IIT-B gives American band its official poster

Ahead of its annual college festival, the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, (IIT-B) seems to be making all the right moves and waves.
Almost a month after it roped in popular American band, the Neal Morse Band, to perform at Mood Indigo in December 2013, the institute has added another feather to its cap. The band will use a poster designed by IIT-B students as their official band picture from now on.
The band features Mike Portnoy, one of the world’s best-known drummers. Headlining for this year’s band event at Mood Indigo, the Livewire Nite on December 20, it is the American progressive rock band’s first tour to Asia.

The third-year energy science and engineering student, who is the brain behind the artwork, Mayuresh Patole, said, “When we invite artistes to perform, we ask them to send the creatives that they would want us to use for the promotions we do for the fest. However, when we contacted the band’s brand manager, he said we are free to use whatever we like.”
Soon after, Patole, head of Mood Indigo’s creative team, started working on it and created a poster and logo unit for the band. “I stitched together the images I got from them and the internet and created a poster, which perfectly described the kind of band it was,” he said.
The Mood Indigo team was in for a surprise when it sent the poster to the band for approval. In an e-mail to the team, the band’s brand manager, Randy George, said, “Neal Morse Band has never really had a good official band picture... would it be possible for us to use this?” Delighted at the response, the team readily agreed.
The band members have already started using the poster as part of their concerts in Israel, Greece and Poland this month.
Media head of the fest Abhirath Sharma said, “Seeing the poster up on the websites selling their tickets is a proud moment for all of us who put in long hours working on the festival. It is also a rare opportunity for a student to showcase his talent on an international platform.”
Will Patole charge the band royalty for his design? “Not at all. The fact that my work is being used by them is very overwhelming. It was like being asked to play a role opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The gesture has upped my hopes and made me even more confident that I will be able to deliver the best designs when I go out in the industry,” he said.
