IIT-B students hit out against Facebook page online posts

Annoyed with the increase in the number of pages promoting defamatory comments against campus individuals/institute bodies on a social networking site, a group of students at IIT-Bombay have written an open letter to the administrators of these pages asking them to desist from doing so.
Early this year, an IIT-B confessions page was launched followed by other pages such as IIT-B Compliments, and IIT-B Grudges. The most recent ones were IIT-Bleaks and IIT Bombay Preach. These pages, according to the letter, are used by students to ridicule colleagues and independent campus bodies.
A student said that two of these pages were removed after repeated reports from students on campus community guideline violations. "Surprisingly, these pages come up during exam time only. The first page came up in February, when our exams were to begin. A couple of pages came up last week, again, just before our mid-term exam," said the student.
The letter states that 'quite often, many of the administrators end up posting material that crosses the thin line between well-intended fun and out-and-out animosity, with complete disregard for privacy'.... 'It's been hard to ignore posts maligning people and organizations on a public forum, starting with personal grudges and going on to include remarks about their lives or activities...' The letter also pointed out to the increase in the numbers of posts objectifying women on these pages. The letter written by four students was published in the institute's student magazine, Insight.
