IIT student beaten up by gun-toting molesters

An IIT-Guwahati student and his cousins, including a JEE rank holder, were held at gunpoint and attacked by a gang of molesters in Ichhapore when they tried to save some schoolgirls from sexual harassment on Wednesday evening. To add to their trauma, Noapara police allegedly refused to register and FIR and only took a general diary entry after making the injured youths wait for four and a half hours.
Coming on the heels of the rape-murder in Kamduni - some 35km from Ichhapore - the reaction of the police does not bode well for a state wracked by a spate of sexual crimes. What's more, locals identify the main accused, Amit Das, as the close aide of a senior Trinamool leader though the party has denied it.
Riki Biswas, a second-year chemical engineering student of IIT-Guwahati, and his cousins Avik Biswas, a JEE engineering rank-holder, and Ranajit Biswas, a Class XI student of Icchapur Anandamath High School, were travelling in their car when they saw two bikers blocking the road and molesting some schoolgirls at the busy Tentultala crossing. It was 4.45pm.
"We saw two youths harassing some schoolgirls who were desperately trying to get away. I got off the car and asked them to stop misbehaving with the girls. But the duo abused us in filthy language," said Riki. The IIT student tried to make a way for the girls to escape, but one of the bikers punched him and shoved him to the ground. When Riki tried to fight back, the other biker joined in the beating. "They kicked and punched me. Then, one of them pulled out a pistol and threatened to kill me. He held the gun to my head and said he would blow my brains out. I was terrified and gave up the fight," said Riki.
'Cops tried to misguide us'
Avik and Ranajit managed to get the girls to safety and returned to help Riki but found themselves staring down the barrel of a gun. They had to endure the beating helplessly. Like Riki, Avik had to suffer the horror of 'mock execution' - being led to believe he would be shot the next moment. "They dragged me to a distance, pressed the gun to my stomach and threatened to kill me," Avik said.
Thankfully, some locals mustered courage to challenge the goons. Finding themselves outnumbered, the duo fled. Riki, Avik and Ranajit were taken to a Barrackpore hospital. When they went to the police, they were in for another shock. "We urged the duty officer to receive our complaint but he asked us to 'correct it' five to six times. When we finally succeeded in writing one that satisfied him, he said his shift was over. We had to wait for the next duty officer, who misbehaved with us right from the start and tried to misguide us, saying an FIR could not be registered in this connection," Riki said.
The duty officer registered only a general diary although locals had identified Amit, say sources. North 24-Parganas Trinamool secretary Kamal Das said no partyman was involved in the attack and none of the accused had links with any Trinamool leader. "We demand punishment for the guilty," he said. Barrackpore police commissioner Sanjay Singh said one of the accused, Sonu Singh, has been arrested. "Raids are on to the nab the other one. I have ordered a departmental inquiry into the allegation of police inaction."
