IIT-I to conduct 5-day course in robotic engineering

The Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I) in collaboration with Centre for Robotics and Control (CRC) will offer a five-day course in robotic engineering, starting July 15.
The objective of the course is to introduce engineers and researchers to the state-of-art technology and products in mechatronics and robotics to enable them take up challenging assignment in their respective areas of work.

Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary field of engineering, that is to say, it rejects splitting engineering into various disciplines. Thus the present course would be beneficial for those coming from various engineering disciplines.
The course fee is subsidized to achieve good participation from students and researchers. It will include course material, tutorial sheets and lecture handouts.
The course is interdisciplinary in nature, thus participants will receive necessary inputs in all areas, starting from fundamentals to simulation to an exposure of the hardware.
It aims at enhancement of knowledge and confidence of the participants to help them become leaders in mechatronics and robotic design teams and carry out successful projects in their perspective fields.
Mechatronics integrates mechanical, electrical and software engineering in the design, development and control of diverse systems used in a range of industries including manufacturing, medicine and service industries.
Course coordinators and assistant professors at IIT-I I A Pilani and M Santhakumar feel that the concept of mechatronics and robotics in India is still largely associated with imported technologies. Import of technology perhaps is a good one-time solution to create the domestic market. But, developing in-house manufacturing and R&D establishments is important for any country.
"A prerequisite for achieving this target is the availability of quality manpower in abundance. The existing trained manpower in this sector in India is scanty. Herein lies the importance of launching human resource development programs in the areas of mechatronics and robotics," describes the course hand-out.
